Odds and Ends

Thoughts on marriage

Last Friday marked 6 months of marriage for my husband and I. Time does fly and before we know it, it would have been year, then 5, then 10 and it goes on. I wrote during our engagement that I was having a bit of difficulty leaving my single life behind for official/legal coupledom. It has not been a fairytale 6 months. We have had deaths and illness in our families, I am getting used to a longer commute (yes I am still not enamoured with it after 6 months) and we are still figuring out how this husband/wife thing works. I guess you probably never ever fully understand as you grow and change everyday. I think though that I am the one who has more upheaval, since I physically moved and am still trying to adjust to new surroundings. The plazas are not just up the road, the pharmacy is not just around the corner, I have to leave earlier for work and that sort of thing. What is constant and unwavering; however, is our love and commitment to each other and to making it work.

World Environment Day

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5. This year the theme is Think. Eat. Save. Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages you to reduce your foodprint.

This World Environment Day, before and beyond, make a commitment to wasting less food. Use your leftovers, do not throw them out. Use them to make other meals. Freeze excess fruits and vegetables before they go bad. You can use them in drinks, shakes and smoothies. Where perishables are concerned, buy only what you need. Buy smaller portions. Make preserves when there is a glut of fruit, do no let them rot under the tree. Make pickles. Buy local.

For more information visit the UNEP World Environment Day website.

Natural Histories Exhibition at the National Gallery

Do not forget to check out the Natural Histories Exhibition at the National Gallery. I have not been myself but I plan on getting there soon. The exhibit runs until the end of June.

Poetry Is An Island

Derek Walcott, Poetry Is An Island is a documentary about Derek Walcott the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992. Derek Walcott was born in St. Lucia in 1930 and currently resides there.

I had the pleasure of seeing Derek Walcott read his poetry at the Calabash International Literary Festival a few years ago. That may have been the high point of all my Calabash festivals to date.

The documentary is being made by film maker Ida Does. Now in post production phase, they are seeking funding to complete the feature documentary which they  are aiming to release later this year.  Using crowd sourcing they are attempting to raise 35, 000 dollars within the next 16 days.

If you wish to contribute, you may visit http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/poetry-is-an-island-derek-walcott?c=home and for more information on the film you may click here. You may follow them on twitter @walcottfilm and visit their Facebook page.

There are different levels for contributions, starting at 5 dollars. Do not be concerned by the amount you are able to give because every little bit counts. Let’s do this!
